Azerbaijan first made an appearance on the popular European television show Eurovision in 2008. Since Azerbaijan's first appearance on the program, the country's contestant(s) have placed within the top ten. In May of 2011, Azerbaijan celebrated when Azerbaijani duet Eldar and Nigar, also known as Ell and Nikki, won the contest with their song "Running Scared.".

Now, in 2012, Azerbaijan will host the Eurovision song contest in it's capital Baku. Azerbaijan has a rich and ancient musical tradition. The country is most famous for its folkloric musical compositions called mugham.
